DC FanDome Re-Ignited My Love for Them

Whether you were waiting to see some footage of the next Flash and Aquaman movie or finally getting a first look at Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson as Black Adam (Super stoked for that). Or even getting the news about Jonathan Kent’s coming out as Bi-sexual. DC comics quickly reminded me why I loved them in the first place.

For the past few years, I have been reading Marvel comics and barely going to DC. Even though I was keeping up with the Rebirth event as much as possible. My time was dedicated to the Marvel universe. Knowing there was nothing wrong with it, I felt my disconnection from the DC universe fading away.

That was until last year I caught up on Titans, young justice, and two of the CW shows being The Flash (Starring Grant Gustin) and Batwoman (Starring Javicia Leslie). Soon, I’ll be caught up on the latest season of Titans and will be turning my focus back to Young Justice, a show I loved when it first came out in 2010.

However, as I digress, what got me back into DC comics was the Audible drama of ‘the Sandman’ by legendary writer Neil Gaiman. When I first heard about it, it didn’t strike my interest until a friend recommended it.

So, a month after Christmas I listened to it, and I was instantly hooked. I didn’t leave my car until the episode was over. Whether I was sitting in my garage or the parking lot of my job. I wanted more of it, and I needed it now.

After I was done with the audio, I went to my local library and started checking out DC books again. I started with Batman, of course, and then The Flash, followed by Green Arrow, then finally The Suicide Squad. I read the Justice League later this year finally getting to the No Justice storyline.

So, when they announced the second annual DCFandome event this year I couldn’t wait to see what they would present. To hear the news of The Flash getting his gold boots (something I didn’t notice until that day), A new Batman animated series coming out, along with season 2 of the Harley Quinn show (Highly recommended).

We even looked at the upcoming Suicide Squad and Gotham Knight Game in 2022, and I got excited to hear about the Sandman Netflix series coming soon, with Titans getting a season four.

But the thing that inspired me the most was seeing the founders of Milestone comics for the first time in my life. I never heard of them until a few years ago and was aware that they were the creators of the superhero Static.

Hearing that they have made a triumphant return and are indeed making a Static movie with Michael B. Jordan as producer. I was happy to hear that we can now read the comics of old and new for all to enjoy.

The thing is being a black person and not having many black writers to be influenced by is a big deal for me. I don’t mean to play identity politics here, but it’s something I struggled growing up with. Now seeing more representation done by race, sexuality, and creed. I feel now that I can see people that look like me make great art and entertain people for generations to come.

With 2021 coming to a swift end and 2022 coming right behind it. It’s looking to be a strong year for DC with new shows, and movies coming out, and two big video games. This could be the surge they need to get things back in the right direction. But I’ll talk more about that later.

Until next time.
